UMM, a new favorite Berkeley Restaurant... There are so many though!

Long Life Vegi House. Its Chinese. Most of the menu is vegetarian, though they also serve seafood. They have a huge variety of fake meat dishes. So far I have tried the Mongolian 'Beef', the Kung Pao 'Chicken', and the Orange 'Chicken.' All really tasty and they have hella cheap lunch specials. Not sure why I waited until my last month of living in Berkeley to try this place. Should have tried it 3 years earlier.

Also Strangelove was really fun last night. Even though Depeche Mode tributes happen all the time, last night Stangelove did it right. They played a lot of Depeche Mode, like 75% of the songs. I wouldn't have minded 100% though. But better then a lot of tributes that barely even play the band they are tributing.

Jul. 31st, 2008 @ 01:31 pm Arnie just terminated my job...
Yikes, I  just got laid off (at least temporarily) as I am a student employee of the state. I'll still get paid for the month of July (which is good since I worked a lot in July) but apparently can't work anymore after today. To be honest, preparing for my trip could be a full time job alone and so the thought of having this extra time isn't sounding so bad. I was only going to work like half time anyway in August and am only an intern right now who doesn't earn a lot. So August's paycheck is a relatively minor issue, though still pretty annoying as I could use it for my trip. Mainly I am concerned about our office as the staff will go from 5 people to 2 people, and we are in the midst of several projects which will halt. I'm going to talk to my boss tomorrow and figure out what to do.

The secretary said I could still work and hopefully get paid retroactively at some point in the future. Not sure if I want to do this as I have a lot do do in regards to preparing for my trip. And what if in the end I am just working for free?

I am also concerned about what to do when I return in December. My boss wanted me to come back to work, and that is what I was planning. At that point I shouldn't be working as a student intern anymore, I should have a regular position with a regular salary. But they also are now on a hiring freeze. This issue should be resolved by then. But if it is not, I will be a bit screwed, without any income, job and therfeore no place to live.

Jul. 18th, 2008 @ 08:10 am website advice
So I am interested in creating a website for my travels. One that I can use to blog, which could then be linked to lj and facebook. And upload photos. And upload documents, like my project description. And post links to other websites. Does anyone know the best and cheapest way to create a website like this?

I looked into blogger.com, but it didn't look like I could post links or upload documents. I want the blog to just be one part of the website, but not the only component.

Does anyone have a microphone that we could borrow for the 4AD tribute tomorrow night? The Stud used to have one, but they no longer do. And we could use one to announce all of the giveaways tomorrow!

During my trip to Thailand in June of 2006 I went to a Wat (temple) in the northern province of Chang Mai. During my visit, a monk tied a piece of string around my right wrist. He also sprinkled water on me. Both for good luck. You can see the string in this photo;

It just came off today! But hey, 15 months of good luck isn't too bad.

Sep. 3rd, 2007 @ 11:05 am Friday Night Fun

So the Mute tribute on Friday went really well despite our doubts that we may have poor attendance due to Burning Man. In fact, we had the best turnout yet. We were also really fortunate as Mute records had sent us a big box of CDs and other stuff to give away. Anyways here is the setlist from the evening, followed by a tracklisting of the CD that the 4 DJs put together. Oh, and I posted all the photos on our myspace profile;  http://www.myspace.com/dancingghosts

Now it's time to decide what to do for our next event!

Just wanted to post my first announcement about the next Dancing Ghosts event. We are doing a tribute to Mute records on August 31st and are very excited about it! Ryan, Miz Margo, Fact 50 and myself will be spinning many fun tunes throughout the night. And we will also be providing cookies (vegan friendly!) and giving away many copies of the 2 CD Mute compilation that we put together. Fad Gadget
Nick Cave
Erasure
Goldfrapp
Plastikman
Diamanda Galas
Non

Last night was Dancing Ghosts second event - a tribute to Beggars Banquet. We played many great tunes from the Beggars Banquet label, daughter labels Situation Two and 4AD and many more. It was a lot of fun and we had a good turnout! Thanks to The Stud for having us, Beggars Group USA for donating CDs for giveaways, Craig for working the door and Julia for baking cookies.

About this Entry
Apr. 1st, 2007 @ 08:08 pm Dreams Are Like Water

So Friday night ended up being a lot of fun and we were quite pleased with the turnout. The large amount of time we put towards organizing and promoting the event paid off which was nice. In addition to the great tunes that were spun, it seamed like people were having a good time, and overall there was just a good vibe throughout the night. 4AD is a record label that a lot of people seam to feel very nostalgic about and I am glad that we were able to give people a night devoted primarily to support this label, and hear tunes that are not played all the time at clubs. Though we spun non-4AD stuff as well, the majority of what we spun was 4AD and the other stuff was similiar sounding music. This night was something that Ryan and I had talked about doing awhile ago, and I am happy that we finally were able to do it!

Anyways many thank yous are in order. Thank you to everyone who showed up to make the night worth it. Thank you to the Stud for having us. Thank you to Dellaena and the folks at the Street team for all of their support/promotions and donations that we were able to use for giveaways. Thank you to Christie for doing the door (and happy birthday)! Thank you to Miz Margo and Merrick for spinning, in addition to all the promoting they did. And a big thanks to Ryan, in addition to being the wonderful boyfriend that he is, for being a great person to co-organize this event with.

Several  people asked if we were going to do events of this nature in the future. Yes that is definitely something that I would like to do again. As Ryan had mentioned in his lj, one possible reason for the good turnout is due to the fact that it isn't something that happens all the time and we want to be careful not to overdue it. Still though, I would like to do another similiar event at some point as it was a lot of fun!

Anyways the links to follow are; a tracklisting of the 2 CD set that the DJs collaborated on and that we gave out that night, the setlists for the event and the link to my flcker account where I just uploaded photos.

Mar. 29th, 2007 @ 02:20 pm 4AD Tribute - Tomorrow Night!

Just wanted to remind  everyone that tomorrow night is our event, 'Dreams Are Like Water - A Tribute to the Artists of 4AD.' I am very excited about all of the great songs that we will be playing tomorrow night. In addition to the great tunes that will be spun, we have accumulated a large amount of exciting items to giveaway - promo CDs of several 4AD bands, promo CDs of related record labels, stickers and posters. In addition, us 4 DJs have put together a pretty kick-ass sampler that we will be giving away many copies of. It is a 2 CD sampler and we have put songs by as many 4AD artists as we possibly could on it.  Anyways I hope people can make it out tomorrow night as it is not an event to be missed.
